Synopsis

On 6 January 2021, more than 1,000 supporters of US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington, DC, to prevent the Senate and House of Representatives from formally confirming Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Five people were killed and many injured.
Around 15% of them were former members of the US military or police. This staggering statistic raises an important question: Why are the very people who took an oath to protect the country’s democracy attacking it?

Writer/director Charlie Sadoff and producer/writer Kenneth Harbaugh were both former military personnel, which allows them to delve deep into the world of veterans. Through them they gain access to the violent right-wing extremist scene in America, which includes anti-state militias such as the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and the Oath Keepers. These groups organised and led by well-trained, highly motivated military veterans pose the greatest threat to democracy in the United States today.
The film explores the complexities of this development right back to its historical roots.
The smoke has cleared over the Capitol, but the problem remains: society in the USA is deeply divided. The factions continue to work and the next elections are imminent.
